For most people modern decor means a very stark, streamlined look, characterized by a minimum of furniture and accessories. The smooth textures and polished surfaces associated with this style provide an open look to any architectural style, although the neutral colors often create a harsh, cold look that is sometimes relieved with a splash of color. While a true modern decor relies heavily on white, cream, bone and beige, with the occasional bright-colored accessory, a notable design feature is the lack of patterns. That means no patterned drapes, wallpaper, or furniture coverings are used beyond the occasional fake animal fur. However, natural fabrics, including cotton, canvas, linen and suede, are usually used in abundance. Polished wood floors and simple throw rugs continue the minimalist look. Painted concrete floors are found in some settings. Cupboards and other wooden pieces often have lacquered finishes . Modern furniture tends to be very angular, with rectangular and cube shapes predominating. Chairs and tables will often sport metal legs. Most furniture pieces, whether chairs, tables or couches, are usually close to the floor to give a minimal appearance. Kitchens will feature stainless steel sinks and appliances to continue the streamlined look . Although natural lighting is preferred, recessed lighting is common. Lamps usually have chrome or metal stands molded into unusual shapes, and the shades are often made of metal as well. Fluorescent lights are popular for their softer look. Mirrored wall tiles are used to reflect the light and give a more open look, especially in smaller rooms . Few accessories are used with modern decor. Abstract art work with interesting shapes and designs may be found on walls. If pillows are used on chairs and couches, they will usually be rectangular and of a strong contrasting color .
